With raspberries and cream
My all time favorite cake thingy is lemon meringue pie but I rarely buy it. Yesterday me and my daughter decided to bake one. Two hours later I had realised why lemon meringue pie is so expensive and where I stood in the heat whisking, trying to stop the lemon curd from splitting, I couldn’t help questioning my decision to create so much work for myself on my birthday. It was worth it though! Best pie ever!
I made a batch of elderflower cordial(flädersaft in Swedish), cleaned out the henhouse and tried to reclaim the veg patch from weeds taking over. Congratulated my neighbour who turned 95 day before and ended up in his garden listening to stories from the old days. Having lived more than double as long as me, he’s still got a lot to tell that I haven’t heard before. All in all a great day.
This flower bed is really growing on me
Haven’t had much time for the garden lately but it seems to be doing alright on its own. Finding new favorite corners of the garden every day.
So came the day. It’s all I’ve thought about the last few days. Lots of people think that there is a difference between having chickens for food or as pets. So far I’ve found the thought comforting but not really true for me. I eat chicken and other meat therefor my moral tells me that I should be able to kill it myself. Yesterday someone told me Just do it and don’t think about it. It got stuck and I decided, if I can jump in the sea in sub zero temperatures I should be able to kill a chicken. All done but I’d rather jump in a frozen sea, any time.
Thought it pretty cute when they picked the cherry tree as their new favourite sleeping spot but not anymore. A few days ago I got woken up by 4 cockerels competing with each other, at 4.50am, ran out to lur them into the henhouse but they were happily sat at the top of the cherry tree. At this time the thought of killing them myself was not very farfetched. The last two nights I’ve climbed the tree myself to take them down, resulting in many cuts and bruises. Good job for them they are so cute.
Nugget showing how to find food
this chick will probably grow bigger than her “mum”
A couple of days ago the new chicken hatched but sadly we’ve had no more. Nugget wanted to be a mum and we got eggs from a neighbour who wanted more chickens but only one hatched. It’s so cute though! We will look after it until Nugget doesn’t want to be a mum anymore. Brahma chicken, already it has feathers down its legs and today Nugget(a Hedemora hen) brought it out in the hen yard showing it how to find worms. Chickens and hens running in to the road has been my problem for the week and then my mum dropped the fantastic idea today -why not ask for faulty nets down the harbour? I have the barn full, even after giving away and chucking loads, so that problem is out of way!
